Most San Fernando Valley homes run two separate systems: a gas furnace for the handful of cold weeks, and an air conditioner that works overtime from May through October. A heat pump replaces both with one electric system — and with new rebate money arriving in the Valley, a lot of homeowners are asking us whether it's actually the better choice. Here's how we answer, without the sales gloss.
First: what a heat pump actually is
A heat pump is, mechanically, an air conditioner that can run in both directions. In summer it moves heat out of your house — exactly like the AC you have now, same outdoor unit, same ducts. In winter it reverses and moves heat into your house from the outside air. Because it moves heat instead of generating it by burning fuel, it delivers two to four units of heat for every unit of electricity it uses. A gas furnace can never beat one-to-one.
That reversal trick matters in the Valley's climate specifically: our winters are mild (heat pumps are most efficient exactly where winter lows stay above freezing, which describes the SFV), and our summers are brutal — which means whatever you install, the cooling side is doing most of the year's work anyway. A modern heat pump IS a modern high-efficiency AC. You're not sacrificing summer performance; you're upgrading it.
The honest comparison
- Comfort: Even. Both heat and cool through your existing ducts. Heat pumps deliver steadier, less blast-y heat than a furnace; some people prefer it, few notice.
- Summer cooling: Advantage heat pump — you're replacing an old AC with a new high-SEER one by definition.
- Operating cost: Depends on your rates, but the efficiency head start (2–4× versus a furnace's sub-1×) does a lot of work — and pairing with solar tilts it decisively, since you make the electricity your heat pump runs on.
- One system vs. two: Advantage heat pump — one piece of equipment to maintain, repair, and eventually replace, instead of a furnace and an AC on separate aging clocks.
- Upfront cost: Historically the gas setup's strongest argument. A heat pump install typically costs more than a like-for-like furnace or AC swap. This is exactly the line item the new rebate attacks.
- Indoor air: Advantage heat pump — no combustion in your home, no flue, no carbon monoxide from the heating system.
"But my furnace still works"
The typical Valley pattern is an AC that dies in a July heat wave while the furnace soldiers on. Here's the thing: if your AC is over ~12 years old, you're going to buy a new cooling system soon regardless. At that point you're choosing between (a) a new AC that only cools, keeping the old furnace, or (b) a heat pump that replaces both — with rebate money available for (b) and not for (a). Replacing a working furnace alone rarely pencils out; replacing it as a side effect of the AC purchase you were already facing is a different calculation entirely.
What the rebate changes
Starting late summer 2026, homes in 11 eligible Valley communities can get TECH Clean California incentives on heat pump HVAC and heat pump water heaters — with income-qualifying households potentially having the full installation cost covered. That's the upfront-cost objection — the main honest argument for staying with gas — addressed directly with settlement money. Our recommendation
If your AC or furnace is 12+ years old and you're in the eligible area: get assessed now, before the program opens. Sizing a heat pump properly requires a load calculation on your actual house — ducts, insulation, orientation, square footage — and homes with a completed assessment file for rebate funds on day one while everyone else is scheduling site visits.
